Cor Scorpii - Attergangar
Reviewed by Anders March 2006.
"From the ashes of Windir comes a new force in extreme metal", that
is how the press-releases that follows this demo starts, and this
new force is Cor Scorpii, which consists of the former Windir
members Gaute Refnes, Stian Bakketeig and Jørn Holen. Together with
new members Thomas Øvstedal, Rune Sjøthun and Inge Jonny Lomheim.
And I'm actually pretty sure that it won't take the band many years
to become a new force within the world of metal, they actually
deliver a good slap of melodic black metal mixed up with other
elements.
Musically Cor Scorpii mixes pure heavy metal and folkish tones into
their metal, and ends with a very atmospheric piece of black metal,
which is lifted with a lot of good melodies. The melodies are one of
the highlights on this demo, there are some really good ones among
them all, a joy to listen to. The compositions in themselves are
also good, quite catching and gripping and hold the listener spiked
in front of the speakers, throughout the 4 tracks.
All 4 tracks on this release offer their own atmosphere and identity,
there are of course traces from the Windir past, as the musical
styles are very close to each other, together with Cor Scorpii
having 3 former Windir members. Though the band has started
something they can call their own, and they seem confident in their
way of approaching things. They have some good ideas and execute
them well.
As the band write themselves, a new force is about to rise and its
name is Cor Scorpii and hails from Norway. Melodic black metal, made
very atmospheric by the use of clever folk-parts and elements,
together with the good melodies and more straight forward heavy
metal influences. A good debut for this band, which I am sure we
soon will hear a lot more of.
