Cor Scorpii - Attergangar
Reviewed by Wouter Roemers February 2006.

Cor Scorpii is a relatively young folk inspired black metal formation hailing from Norway. Consisting of ex- and current members of established genre acts such as Windir, Ulcus and Vreid. The result is that there's no lack of enthusiasm and capability within the band's ranks. Similarities with Windir and Ulcus arise as Cor Scorpii is melodic and inspired by Norwegian nature and folk music.

Opening this recording is 'Fall Of Man', a cut that puts the band's influences on the map thoroughly: folk melodies mixed with harsh black metal with typical Norse instrumentation. 'Transcendental Journey' is more straightforward black metal that sounds quite majestic, a bit as Dimmu Borgir on their original "Stormblast" album, but more drenched in folk atmosphere. It is in this track that mastermind Gaute Refsnes really shines on keyboards, intertwining the track with multiple atmospheric synthesizer lines and fast piano pieces. 'Attergangar' follows suit in the established pattern of the latter track. Overall the structure of this track is more open, allowing the track to flow and breathe freely. In the centre there's a calm piano solo for Refsnes, before the track kicks into high gear again.

Cor Scorpii is oozing with talent and it won't be long before a label will sign them. A highly recommended demo here. address: www.corscorpii.net
