Cor Scorpii - Attergangar
Reviewed by Patricia April 2006.
«Attergangar» is the debut demo from Norway’s Cor Scorpii. This six
pieces was founded after the abrupt and tragic split of Windir (see
their releases on Voices of Wonder / Head Not Found). The band was
founded by ex-Windir, Ulcus and Vreid members. The moniker, demo
title, native country and even the artwork suggest some kind of old
school black metal (mainly if you didn’t already heard the releases
of the above mentioned acts) but what Cor Scorpii offer is melodic
black metal with a huge folk background. Cor Scorpii have found the
right balance between atmospherics and aggression the whole enriched
by a primordial melancholic feeling delivered throughout the whole
demo. A common problem with black metal acts with important
keyboards lines is their tendency to concentrate all the atmospheres
on the key lines and that way they often forget to put enough effort
in the song writing… something that Cor Scorpii don’t suffer from.
Most of the melody and catchiness come from the way songs are
constructed and for this simple reason all the (long) tracks of
«Attergangar» succeed in holding your interest for their duration.
I’ve listened to those four tracks several times now and it gets
better each time. No need to be a soothsayer to realise this act
shall be signed in the near future.
