Cor Scorpii - Attergangar
Reviewed by Marcel on Wednesday 4 January 2006.

Let me introduce to you: Cor Scorpii. Cor Scorpii is founded by Gaute Refsnes, known from Ulcus and especially Windir. When Ulcus and Windir joined forces, just before releasing the brilliant "1184" album, Gaute also continued making music on his own which didn't fit Windir completely. It was after the tragic death of Valfar with as result the end of Windir when Gaute got more time and therefore formed a complete line-up and started working on Cor Scorpii's debut demo.

Besides Gaute Refsnes the line-up furthermore consists of Jørn Holen (Vreid, Windir, Ulcus), Stian Bakketeig (Windir, Ulcus), Rune Sjøthun, Inge Jonny Lomheim and Thomas S. Øvstedal. With this line-up Cor Scorpii recorded their debut demo "Attergangar" which has been releases only very recently.

Musically one would expect another band sounding similar to Windir and Ulcus because of the participating members but this is not completely fair to say. There are indeed many similarities between Cor Scorpii on one hand and Windir and Ulcus on the other hand but still Cor Scorpii manages to give an own twist to the music. Just like Windir and Ulcus the music is melodic sounding with inspirations drawn from Norwegian nature and folk music but on "Attergangar" also lots of aggression is put into the sound which makes this demo sound really heavy at the same time as well. Vocal-wise you'll find both the well-known harsh black metal screams as well as choir-alike clean vocals. Just like in both Windir and Ulcus the melodic lead guitars have an important role in the total sound but also the keyboards play an important role. They play actually more classical inspired parts which sometimes also reminds me to "Witchcraft" from Obtained Enslavement a bit. All four songs are full of variety and with each new listen there are more things to discover. The sound on "Attergangar" is also really good which makes this demo all the more enjoyable.

With "Attergangar" Cor Scorpii released a very impressive debut demo and I'm really sure that this band will come far because they're extremely talented in what they're doing. I'm also sure it doesn't take long before they'll be picked up by a label to record and release a debut full-length album. Mark my words, we will hear lots more from this talented band!
