Cor Scorpii - Attergangar
Reviewed by Jan F. Lindsø March 2006.
The more or less legendary black metal band Windir for sure left
something unique when the band was ended in 2004 due to the tragic
death of founder and frontman Valfar. I recently reviewed the demo
of a band called Mistur, which lives in the same area, and now it’s
COR SCORPII’s turn, another band not that different from the first
mentioned.
Their website tells us that the band was founded by Windir’s
keyboard player Gaute Refsnes, and the lineup was completed by Stian
Bakketeig (ex-Windir) on lead guitar, Jørn Holen(ex-Windir/Vreid) on
drums, Rune Sjøthun on rhythm guitar, Inge Jonny Lomheim on bass and
Thomas S. Øvstedal on vocals. The drums of the album was actually
recorded in studio 1184 (Vreid) and the rest in Bakketeig’s Amla
Metal Studio (Mistur).
The element that reminds me most of Windir in this demo is
definitely the guitars, which is in the same veins as the ones on
Likferd, and I’m pretty sure they used the same equipment as in this
album. Except from the sound and some riffs here and there, the band
is still a bit different from Windir, with their own songs and
approach. The music doesn’t stand out as the most original band, but
I must admit that they really have something going here. Especially
songs like the title-track, where some parts really sound promising.
The piano really fits this song, and sometimes it actually reminds
me a bit of Old Man’s Child, in a positive way of course.
Not going completely to the top this time, but I will look out for
upcoming material with great interest.
